Important information about your water supply

May 2007 — The Onondaga County Water Authority is once again pleased to provide its customers and consumers with the Authority's 2006 Annual Water Supply Statement and Consumer Confidence Report. Throughout this report readers will be able to find useful information specifically related to OCWA as well as information related to water in general. In addition to mailing the report to all customers of record, the Authority continues its practice of providing copies of the report to local libraries and posting the text on the Internet.

The Authority had a very busy year in 2006 with respect to capital projects and system growth. During the year, projects completed included the following:

  • Substantial completion of a 1-MG elevated Central Square tank replacement
  • Completion of the Oneida River crossing for a new 16-inch feed to southern Oswego
  • Construction of the Caughdenoy Pumping Station
  • Improvements to the distribution maintenance facility in Oswego
  • Completion of a year-long pilot plant study related to future improvements to the Marcellus Water Treatment Plant.
  • OCWA added 64,452 feet of new water main and replaced an additional 29,670 feet of main.
  • The Authority also replaced 121 hydrants and added 154 new hydrants.

Two other key highlights include addition of the Village of East Syracuse water system as full-time wholesale customer and the lease of the Village of Minoa water system, converting 1150 customers from wholesale to retail.

Looking ahead into 2007, OCWA will continue its ongoing improvement efforts. With the water treatment plant study in hand, the Authority has begun design of the recommended improvements. In addition to planned main and hydrant replacements, OCWA also has two replacement storage tank projects underway, with a 1-MG tank being constructed in Van Buren that will replace tanks located in Lakeland and Geddes and 1.5-MG tank being constructed in Canastota.

Additionally, OCWA is working in a cooperative effort with the Metropolitan Water Board and Onondaga County leadership to meet the Federal mandate related to the construction of finished water storage facilities for the County. In the coming days and months, all of us will be hearing and learning more about this essential project.
